Ronaldo flies back for Man United showdown talks

Cristiano Ronaldo returned to England Monday to hold showdown talks with Manchester United about his future.

The 37-year-old missed the club’s pre-season tour of Thailand and Australia and hasn’t spoken to United boss Erik ten Hag since handing in a transfer request last month.

United have continually insisted that Ronaldo isn’t for sale and that he will be an important part of their squad for the upcoming 2022/23 campaign, despite the Portugal international being desperate to spend the remaining years of his career playing Champions League football.

It’s unclear if he will return to training this week, but Ronaldo is expected to have a face-to-face meeting with Ten Hag in the coming days to resolve the stand-off, one way or another.

Chelsea, Bayern Munich, PSG and Barcelona were among the elite clubs monitoring Ronaldo’s situation earlier in the summer, though interest from all of them has since dissipated, leaving the five-time Ballon d’Or winner with few viable options.

According to The Athletic, United are treating the fact that the former Real Madrid and Juventus man is returning to Manchester this week as a sign that he’ll withdraw his transfer request.
