Ronaldo Handed 30-Day Ban, €255 Fine For Leaving Portugal Camp

Cristiano Ronaldo has been handed a 30-day suspension and fined €255 by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) for leaving the national team camp following a dispute over his role in the squad.

The FPF’s Disciplinary Council announced the sanctions on Monday, upholding the charge against the 41-year-old forward for intentionally committing a disciplinary offence under Article 160(1) of its disciplinary regulations.

Proceedings were opened on October 9 over the incident, which reportedly occurred two days earlier.

Ronaldo left Portugal’s camp in Copenhagen ahead of their Nations League match against Denmark after being an unused substitute in the team’s game against Norway. The Al Nassr forward had accused coach Jorge Jesus of breaking his word twice over his role in the team.

Jesus denied reaching any agreement with Ronaldo but left the door open for the forward’s return after Portugal’s 2-1 victory.

The disciplinary council’s ruling stated that Ronaldo had been convicted of committing the offence intentionally and imposed a 30-day suspension alongside a fine of €255, equivalent to 2.5 units under the federation’s disciplinary framework.

The Portuguese international had faced a potential suspension of between one and six months under the relevant regulations, which prescribe sanctions for players who unjustifiably leave national-team duties.

Ronaldo had also requested that mitigating circumstances be considered, citing his career achievements, sporting honours and a public statement issued on October 6, 2026.

In the statement, he apologised for failing to acknowledge supporters after the Norway match and for leaving his teammates, while maintaining that he remained available for selection after serving any punishment arising from the incident.

However, the FPF’s announcement did not clarify which matches or activities the suspension would cover or whether time served under a provisional suspension would count towards the 30-day sanction.

FPF president Pedro Proença has previously said the federation wanted Ronaldo to return to the national team once the matter was resolved.
