Samuel Kalu seeking to make history on EPL debut

Set to become fifth Nigerian to score on debut in the competition

Nigerian international midfielder Samuel Kalu will be seeking to become the fifth Nigerian to score on his Premier League debut when his new club Watford take on Burnley at the Turf Moor in a Premier League match Saturday evening.

John Utaka, Peter Odemwingie, Odion Ighalo and Emmanuel Dennis all scored on their debut in the competition and Kalu will be keen to join that exclusive list if he makes his debut on Saturday.

Kalu will also become the third Nigerian player at Watford to score on his debut in the competition if he nets today after Ighalo who scored in Watford 2-2 draw at Goodison Park against Everton in August 2015 and Emmanuel Dennis who scored when his club defeated Aston Villa in their opening league game last August.

Watford signed Kalu from French Ligue 1 outfit, Bordeaux last month on a four-and-a-half-year deal.

The Nigerian featured 86 times for Bordeaux, scored 10 goals and provided eight assists during his four-year stint at the Ligue 1 side.

Kalu is the fourth Nigerian at the relegation threatened club after Dennis who joined last summer from Belgian side, Club Brugge; William Troost-Ekong who joined last season from Serie A side, Udinese and Oghenekaro Etebo who joined on loan from Stoke City while former Nigeria U-20 star Tom Dele Bashiru is on loan at Reading.

Super Eagles first choice goalkeeper Maduka Okoye has also joined the club albeit he is playing on loan at Dutch Eredivise side, Sparta Rotterdam till the end of the season.
