Scholes Explains Why Carrick Won’t Get Manchester United Job Permanently

Paul Scholes has cast doubt on the possibility of Michael Carrick being appointed Manchester United’s permanent manager, despite the interim boss making a strong start with back-to-back wins over Manchester City and Arsenal.

Speaking on The Good, The Bad & The Football podcast, the United legend explained why he believes the club will hesitate to hand Carrick the role full-time.

‘He’s come into the job now and it’s been that bad for a year that it couldn’t really get any worse so the pressure isn’t really on you while you’re interim manager,’ Scholes said.

He stressed that the dynamic changes once the position becomes permanent.

‘Once you take that job full-time, at the start of the season next year, let’s say, all of a sudden you’ve got to be winning games straightaway,’ he noted.

Scholes also pointed to United’s past experience with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as a factor in their caution.

‘They will be scarred a little bit from the Ole thing. If the Ole thing hadn’t have happened then it would probably be more likely,’ he remarked.

Finally, he suggested that Carrick would struggle to compete with elite managers expected to be available in the summer.

‘But if Michael has got to go up against, say, Thomas Tuchel in the summer then there’s only one winner if you’re looking at coaching big clubs and winning big prizes so you can’t really compete with that,’ Scholes concluded.
