Selles: Why I Left Onuachu Out Of Bournemouth Tie

‘Paul Onuachu was left out of Southampton’s 1-0 loss to Bournemouth in their mid-week Premier League clash at St Mary’s Stadium for tactical reason’,
according the Ruben Selles, the head coach of the club.

The Nigerian has started just three games for Saints since his £18million arrival from Genk in January, failing to find the net yet for the Premier League
bottom club.

Onuachu, who came from Genk in January after scoring 16 goals in 19 appearances in the Belgian Pro League has not failed to make the Saints’ matchday squad
since his arrival until the Bournemouth game.

The 28 year old has made three starts, subbed on six times and have been an unused substitute thrice.

Selles revealed that one of the reasons behind the Nigerian’s absence was the return to fitness of striker Che Adams following a thigh injury.

‘We had Che Adams and Sekou Mara,’ Selles told HampshireLive when quizzed on where the Nigerian striker was.

“We thought because Che Adams is as good as any striker in the air, also Sekou [Mara]. I don’t think there’s a difference between them and Paul Onuachu. We
thought we’d be more dynamic, we can attack with the spaces better in the box. So it was a tactical decision.”
