Semi Ajayi: Hull City Focused on Creating Own History After Bright EPL Start

Super Eagles defender Semi Ajayi says Hull City are focused on creating their own history in the Premier League after making an encouraging start to the 2026/27 season.

The Tigers sit eighth in the table with nine points from their opening six matches, following a 2-2 draw against Everton at the MKM Stadium last weekend.

In an interview with Footy-Africa, Ajayi expressed satisfaction with Hull’s early-season performances but warned against complacency, insisting there was still plenty of work to do.

‘It’s been a good start. We’re happy with the work we’ve done so far,’ the Nigerian international said.

‘We know we haven’t done anything yet. There’s still a long way to go in the season, but we put ourselves in a really good position to have a positive season, so we’re really happy.’

Ajayi has also made his mark in Hull’s return to top-flight football, scoring against Manchester United and helping the club compete against some of the Premier League’s established sides.

The centre-back described his goal against United as a special moment but stressed that securing victory was more important than his individual achievement.

‘It was a blessing to score the first goal back in the Premier League, also against a massive team like Manchester United, something I don’t take lightly,’ he said.

‘It was more important for me really that we got the three points and the win, which we did. So yeah, I was pleased.’

Asked about comparisons with Sunderland, who enjoyed a remarkable campaign last season, Ajayi insisted Hull were concentrating on their own progress rather than trying to replicate another club’s achievements.

‘We’re not really focused on Sunderland. We’re focused on ourselves,’ he said.

‘We have to do our own thing. We have to be Hull City. Sunderland had an amazing season last season, but it’s down to us to create our own history.’

Hull’s next challenge is a Premier League encounter against Fulham this weekend, with Ajayi emphasising the importance of approaching every fixture with the right preparation.

‘It’s just another game that we need to win, and we want to pick up points,’ he said.

‘Every single game is going to be tough this year. We know that every team plays differently, so we’ll approach that game with a new game plan and try to get as many points as we can.’

Hull will hope to maintain their positive start as they seek to establish themselves in the Premier League, with Ajayi’s defensive contributions expected to remain important to their ambitions.
