Silesia Confirmed as Host of 2028 European Athletics Championships

Silesia has been officially confirmed as the host venue for the 2028 European Athletics Championships, following the announcement made on the opening day of the European Athletics Council Meeting in Birmingham.

The championships will take place from 3-8 June at the Slaski Stadium, just one month before the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

This landmark decision marks the first time in the 92-year history of the European Athletics Championships that Poland will host the flagship event.

Poland has previously staged several major athletics competitions, including the 2017 European Athletics U23 Championships, the 2021 European Athletics Indoor Championships, and the European Athletics Team Championships in 2019, 2021, and 2023.

European Athletics President Dobromir Karamarinov hailed the announcement as historic, noting Silesia’s proven ability to deliver world-class competitions.

‘Silesia has consistently demonstrated its capability to host events of the highest standard. With strong regional support and the Polish Athletic Association’s expertise, we are confident that Silesia 2028 will be a championship of exceptional quality,’ he said.

Poland, the sixth most successful nation in European Athletics Championships history with 59 gold medals and 185 medals overall, could reach its 200th medal milestone during the 2028 edition.

Sebastian Chmara, President of the Polish Athletic Association, described the announcement as a ‘truly landmark moment’ for Polish athletics.

‘Together with our partners, the Silesian Voivodeship and the Ministry of Sport and Tourism, we are committed to delivering a world-class event that will inspire athletes, engage fans, and showcase the very best of our sport,’ he said.

Poland secured six medals at the 2024 European Athletics Championships in Rome, including two golds from Natalia Bukowiecka in the 400m and Wojciech Nowicki in the hammer throw.

The 2026 European Athletics Championships will be staged in Birmingham, Great Britain, from 10-16 August.
