South Africa seek first AFCON semifinal in 24 years to face Nigeria again!
The Opta supercomputer may have made Cape Verde the slight favourite to win Saturday evening’s AFCON 2023 quarterfinal clash South Africa but the Bafana
Bafana will be hoping to defy the odds again like they did when they defeated Morocco in their round of 16 clash.
Hugo Broos men have reached the quarter-finals in three of their last four appearances at the Africa Cup of Nations, while they’re looking to reach the
semi-finals of the competition for the first time since 2000 (when they lost 2-0 against Nigeria).
The only obstacle on their way to setting up a second AFCON semifinal clash with Nigeria is Cape Verde, a country they will be meeting for the second time in
the history of the competition.
The first time they met was 11 years ago when they drew 0-0 draw in the group stage. And that was Cape Verde’s very first match in the competition and the
opening game of the 2013 edition – hosted by South Africa.
Cape Verde are however looking to reach the semi-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations for the first time, with this their second quarter-final appearance after a 2-0 defeat to Ghana in 2013.
