Super Falcons lose for the 10th time in 11 Olympic Games matches
The Super Falcons lost 1-0 to Spain in their second group game on Sunday at FC Nantes’ Stade de la Beaujoire in Nantes, France.
The Nigerians held the reigning World champion for 85th minute before La Roja’s Barcelona player, Alexia Putellas netted the goal that will like end Nigeria’s participation in the hunt for women’s football medals at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
The loss is the 10th in 11 games by the Nigerians who made their Olympics debut in 2000 in Sydney, Australia where they lost all their three opening games.
The Super Falcons have won just one of the 11 games they have played in the competition and that was in 2004 when they pipped Japan 1-0 through a Vera Okolo’s goal.
The Super Falcons will be hoping for a positive result against Japan in their final group game on Wednesday at the Stade de la Beaujoire so they could be in contention for one of the slots for the two best third-placed teams that will advance to the quarterfinals with the two automatic qualifiers from each group.
