Swiss Star Werro Dominates Paris 800m, Signals Bright Future

Swiss middle-distance runner Audrey Werro delivered a career-defining performance at the Diamond League meeting in Paris, storming to victory in the women’s 800m with a world-leading time that also shattered the Diamond League record, meeting record, national record, and her personal best.

Werro, who has enjoyed a strong indoor and outdoor season, reflected on the transformation in her career since turning professional: ‘I had a really good indoor season and a really good start of an outdoor season.

‘I feel that the biggest change in my life is the fact that I have become a professional athlete. I am no longer at school, and I must say it was tough to juggle both activities. Now, there is no excuse as I have all the time in the world to just focus on training, recovering and the sport itself.’

The 20-year-old admitted that her transition from junior to senior competition was challenging, recalling her debut at the Munich European Championships: ‘My transition from being a junior to the seniors was very challenging. In my first year as a senior, I competed at the Munich European Championships, and it was really hard to find my place in the field. Like many, I had my struggles, but now it is going well.’

Werro confessed she did not expect to run this fast so early in the season, but her recent performances have fueled her confidence: ‘I was not expecting to run this fast this season. These recent performances have really given me hope and built my confidence for what is coming next.’
