‘They Haven’t Forgotten Me’: Giroud Delighted By Arsenal Return

Olivier Giroud says he was overcome with special emotions on his return to Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium, where the Lille striker received a standing ovation from his former club’s supporters.

Giroud returned to north London on Tuesday night when Lille faced Arsenal in the UEFA Champions League, enjoying a warm reception despite his side’s defeat.

The French striker spent five-and-a-half years at Arsenal after joining from Montpellier in 2012. He scored 105 goals in 253 appearances for the Gunners before moving to London rivals Chelsea in January 2018.

Reflecting on his return, Giroud said he was delighted that Arsenal supporters still remembered his contribution to the club.

‘It was a great feeling, with special emotions. I spent five and a half years here, they haven’t forgotten me. That’s what’s beautiful about the English,’ he said.

Giroud, who won three FA Cups with Arsenal and claimed the 2017 FIFA Puskás Award, admitted he would have preferred Lille to leave the Emirates with a positive result.

‘I would have preferred us to get something tonight, but I am happy with this reunion with my former club,’ he added.

The veteran forward has also hinted that the current campaign could be his last as a professional footballer, saying he wants to enjoy every remaining moment of his career.

‘As a player, I think it is very probably my last season. That’s why I’m making the most of every moment,’ Giroud said.

‘I am at peace with myself and everything I have accomplished in my career. I feel more relaxed than ever.’
