‘This Year is All About Having Fun’: Jefferson-Wooden Makes Stunning 100m Return
American sprinter Melissa Jefferson-Wooden made a stunning return to the 100m, winning at the Stockholm Diamond League in 10.84 seconds, her fastest ever season-opening run.
Jefferson-Wooden, who had not raced over 100m in nine months, expressed delight at breaking the 11-second barrier so early in her campaign.
‘I’m really happy with a sub-11 and with how I’m feeling so soon after the Rome Diamond League the other day – it’s great to run fast so soon after running well there so I’m very pleased indeed,’ she said.
The 24-year-old emphasised that this season is about enjoyment and competition rather than chasing records.
‘This was my first 100m in nine months and is my fastest ever 100m season-opener so it’s very exciting for me. This year is all about having fun, being a good competitor and enjoying the perks of what I achieved last year. I’d like to run a PB this summer but I’m not focusing on it, the sky is the limit, though.’
Her victory adds momentum to Team USA’s sprinting prospects ahead of the summer’s major championships, with Jefferson-Wooden signalling she is ready to challenge the world’s best once again.
