Thompson-Herah: ‘I wanted to stop the season, but my husband changed my mindset’

Five-time Olympics champion, Elaine Thompson-Herah has revealed she almost stopped her 2023 athletics season after failing to qualify for the individual
events of the just ended 19th World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary.

The 31 year old finished fifth in the 100m event at the Jamaican Championships in Kingston, Jamaica early July and thus missed out on securing a place in the
100m event in the Jamaican team.

The 2016 and 2021 Olympics 100/200m champion returned to run in the event in Zurich on Thursday since her failure in Kingston, coming third behind World
champion, Shar Carri Richardson of the USA and country woman, Natasha Morrison, with both Jamaicans credited with 11.00 seconds, a personal season’s best for
Thompson-Herah.

In her post race reaction, Thompson-Herah revealed she almost ended her season in July.

‘This race was really good, it was my first race after our National championships. I do not care about it technically and the start – I will have to look at
it afterwards.

‘The fact that I did not make it to the World Championships in an individual race was hard. I wanted to stop the season, but my husband changed my mindset.

‘I am a warrior, this is not about crying. So achieving a SB today is great. You just need patience. It was a pleasure for me being part of the Jamaican
relay team in Budapest.

‘A good story is not about winning all the time, it is also about the difficult times. I have a great support system like my grandmother. I have a strong
support team with my friends, my family and my husband. When you are down, you often do not hear a word from others,’ she said.
