Tobi Amusan: ‘I just wanted to finish strong today’
Nigerian makes it a hat-trick of wins in Berlin
Nigeria’s Tobiloba Amusan says she has accomplished what she came to do at the 2022 ISTAF Berlin athletics meeting and will now shift her focus to the Diamond League final in Zurich where she hopes to successfully defend her Diamond Trophy.
The reigning World and Commonwealth Games champion and record holder raced home first in the 100m hurdles event in 12.45 seconds ahead of Tia Jones (12.58), the American who will be in the line up in the Diamond League final and Jamaican, Megan Tapper (12.66), semifinalist at the World championships who finished fourth at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
With her win, the 25 year old Nigerian has made it a hat-trick of wins on her third visit to Berlin, Germany.
She won in her debut at the meeting in 2019, running 12.51 seconds at the Olympiastadion.
Amusan was there the following winter, running 7.93 seconds in the semifinal and 7.89 seconds in the final over the 60m hurdles at the ISTAF Indoor meeting held at the Mercedes-Benz Arena in Berlin
The Nigerian was delighted with her result.
‘It has been a long season, but I am still alive. I just wanted to finish strong today. I was here to execute,’ said the reigning world champion.
She also said she needs to work on her start and finish ahead of the Diamond League final.
”I need to work on what I need to work on, but it is alright. There is always room for improvement. I need to improve my start and my finish. It is a little wobbly. Now I will race again in Zurich. Today we had a great competitive field. My goal was to focus on myself,’ said the Nigerian after the race in Berlin.
