Tottenham 6-2 Leicester City: Son makes Spurs history with hat-trick

Son Heung-min is the first Tottenham player to score a Premier League hat-trick as a substitute when he scored thrice in the final 17 minutes of their 6-2 demolition of visiting Leicester City at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium on Saturday.

The hat-trick is also the first overall in the competition since Steven Naismith against Chelsea in September 2015.

The South Korean has had an indifferent season since the Premier League restarted after the conclusion of the 2021/22 season, going six games without a goal.

The 30 year old’s only goal involvement was the assist he provided for Eric Dier Tottenham’s opening day 4-1 annihilation of Southampton at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium in August.

At half-time, things were looking very even at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

That was until Son Heung-min was brought onto the pitch. A thirteen minute hat-trick, including two sensational long range strikes, helped Spurs rally and put six past Leicester to go joint-top of the table.

Son was relieved to finally get off the mark in a sensational way.

“It was tough and frustrating to not start, and I knew that I could be doing a lot better than I was. The team has been brilliant, but individually I was not playing well.

‘I came on and wanted to help the team in a tough match at 3-2, as I always try to do on the pitch.

‘We have great supporters, and great teammates that help me and support me. Even when the third goal went to VAR I was very confident it was onside!”

Former Tottenham manager and now a Premier League pundit Tim Sherwood says Son is every coach’s dream player.

“There is not one manager in world football that wouldn’t want Son Heung-min. His attitude, his character, his work-rate and his quality. He took on board that he had been left out because he wasn’t playing at his best. You just can’t keep a player like that down for long.”
