Trabzonspor Coach: Onuachu Will Score More Goals

Trabzonspor coach Hüseyin Çimşir has backed Nigeria international Paul Onuachu to score more goals for the Turkish club after the striker ended his Süper Lig drought with a brace in Sunday’s emphatic 5-0 victory over Gençlerbirliği.
Onuachu, who had gone eight league matches without scoring, opened his account in style before adding a second to help Trabzonspor secure a convincing win. His previous Süper Lig goal came in the club’s 2-1 victory over Galatasaray on April 4, 2026.
The former Genk striker was lively during his time on the pitch but was forced off in the 43rd minute after picking up an injury, with Franculino Dju introduced as his replacement.
Çimşir, however, played down concerns over the injury and expressed confidence that Onuachu can build on his goalscoring performance.
‘I don’t think it’s anything serious. There’s no problem,’ Çimşir was quoted as saying by Fanatik.
The Trabzonspor coach also revealed that he had spoken to his players about the pressure strikers sometimes face when goals are hard to come by, urging Onuachu to remain confident when opportunities arise.
‘He was getting into positions, but couldn’t score. He was going to score one day, and he did today,’ Çimşir said. ‘I seriously think he contributed to this team last year as well. He’s one of our important players. We have this kind of weapon.’
Çimşir believes Onuachu can become even more effective if Trabzonspor consistently supplies him with crosses from the flanks.
‘I think he can score even more goals, especially when we connect him with crosses from the flanks,’ he added.
Onuachu’s injury will be assessed ahead of Trabzonspor’s trip to Konyaspor, with Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle also monitoring the striker’s fitness ahead of his squad announcement for this month’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
