Troost-Ekong equals Ojebode, Okocha and Moses’ AFCON scoring feat

Super Eagles on-field captain, William Troost-Ekong scored from the spot for Nigeria’s only goal in their 1-1 draw in regulation and extra time against South Africa in an Africa Cup of Nations semifinal tie on Wednesday in Buoake to nter into Nigeria’s history book in the competition.

The 30 year old, playing in his 15th AFCON game for Nigeria has now scored two penalty goals for Nigeria at this 2023 CAF Africa Cup of Nations (vs Côte d’Ivoire and vs South Africa), becoming in the process the fourth Nigerian player to score multiple goals from the spot at the same AFCON edition, after Samuel Ojebode (also 2 in 1976), Jay-Jay Okocha (also 2 in 2004) and Victor Moses (also 2 in 2013).

It was also his fourth goal in the competition after scoring against South Africa on July 10, 2019 at the quarterfinal stage and Guinea-Bissauin January 2019.
