Udeze: Simeone’s System Could Limit Lookman’s Flair

Former Super Eagles defender Ifeanyi Udeze has praised Ademola Lookman’s high profile switch from Atalanta to Atletico Madrid but admitted he fears the Nigerian forward may struggle under Diego Simeone’s rigid philosophy.

Lookman sealed a €35million move in the winter transfer window, a transfer widely celebrated by fans and pundits.

Speaking on radio, Udeze explained that Simeone is a coach deeply rooted in defensive football and rarely alters his system to accommodate individual flair.

He stressed that the Argentine prefers players with relentless work rate rather than those who dwell on dribbling or holding the ball, which is a hallmark of Lookman’s style.

Udeze warned that Simeone’s emphasis on pressing and marking could stifle Lookman’s creativity.

‘My only fear is that Simeone should not turn him into a defensive player and before you know it, the skills would not be there anymore,’ he said.

He added that Simeone demands his players attack, defend, and mark with intensity, recovering possession immediately after losing the ball, an aspect of the game Lookman has not been known for.
