UEFA Champions League: Haaland beats Osimhen to player of the week award

Nigerian wins goal of the week honour

Manchester City forward Erling Haaland has been voted UEFA Champions League player of the week after the Norwegian scored five times in his team’s 7-0 annihilation of German side, RB Leipzig in the round of 16 second leg tie at the Etihad stadium on Tuesday.

Haaland had eight attempts on goal and scored from five of then to beat three other candidates viz Hakan Calhanoglu of Inter Milan, Karim Bnezema of Inter Milan and Nigeria and Napoli forward, Victor Osimhen.

While Osimhen scored twice from his three attempts at goal, Benzema netted just once from the six attempts he was presented with in Real Madrid’s 1-0 defeat of Liverpool.

Osimhen is however rewarded by the fans who voted his opening goal against Eintracht Frankfurt of Germany the goal of the week.

The Napoli forward rose majestically to head Matteo Politano’s pinpoint delivery into the top corner at the stroke of half time.

After the break, the Nigerian was again in the right place to turn Giovanni Di Lorenzo’s low cross into the net after a beautifully worked team move.
