UEFA Champions League Review: Rangers, Atlético Madrid set unwanted record

Rangers are officially the worst team in the history of the Champions League following a 3-1 defeat to Ajax on Tuesday evening.

Last season’s Europa League finalist has become the first side to lose all six group stage games in the UEFA Champions League in the competition’s history.

Their minus 20 goal difference is also the most by any team in competition’s history.

They have conceded 20+ (22) goals in the UEFA Champions League this season; just the second time a Scottish side have shipped 20+ times in a single European Cup/UCL campaign, after Rangers themselves in 1959-60.

Also ending the group stage with an unenviable record are Atletico Madrid who finished bottom of a Champions League group stage for the first time in history.

They have also recorded their second-worst total in this round of the competition (5 points – W1 D2 L3) after the 2009/10 campaign (3 points – D3 L3).

Diego Simone’s side conceded nine goals in the process, their most in a group stage with the Argentine as manager (eight in 2020/21 and 2021/22).

Meanwhile Liverpool’s Jurgen Klopp did not only lead his side to end Napoli’s unbeaten start to the season, the German also officially became the seventh manager to take charge of 100+ UEFA Champions League games.

Only Man City coach, Pep Guardiola (61) has more wins from his first 100 games in charge in the competition than Klopp (58).

Klopp is also the fourth Liverpool coach to reach the mark of 400 matches in all competitions (Bob Paisley 535, Tom Watson 742, Bill Shankly 783).

He has already won more matches than any other Reds coach within his first 400 matches with the club (243).
