Umejiaku: Coaches’ Instructions Inspired Flamingos to World Cup Glory

Nigeria forward Oluebube Umejiaku has credited the coaches’ instructions and team spirit for helping the Flamingos overcome Japan 2-1 and win their maiden FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup title on Saturday.

Umejiaku scored Nigeria’s second goal in the 2-1 victory at the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Rabat, Morocco, as the Flamingos became the first African nation to win the competition.

The forward, who was also named Player of the Match and received the Golden Ball as the tournament’s best player, said the final was a difficult contest but Nigeria remained focused on executing the coaches’ instructions rather than chasing goals.

“I feel good, I feel very happy. I thank God for everything. It was very difficult for us but the instructions of the coaches made us put our heads up and just take everything as it comes,” Umejiaku said.

“We didn’t have to push for the goals, just to keep ourselves up and we needed to encourage ourselves on the field of play.”

Nigeria took the lead in the 39th minute through Awawu Bashiru before Umejiaku doubled the advantage two minutes into the second half.

Japan reduced the deficit through Fuki Ito in the 80th minute and pushed for an equaliser, but the Flamingos held on to secure a landmark victory.

The triumph completed a remarkable recovery for Nigeria, who lost their opening match 2-1 to Poland before winning six consecutive games to lift their first U-17 women’s world title.

Umejiaku’s decisive contribution against Japan capped an outstanding tournament and helped Nigeria deliver a historic achievement for African women’s football.
