Umoafia Claims Nigeria’s Fourth Gold Medal at Glasgow 2026

Edidiong Joseph Umoafia has won gold for Team Nigeria in the men’s 71kg weightlifting event at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.

Umoafia produced a dominant performance at the SEC Armadillo, lifting 147kg in the snatch and 172kg in the clean and jerk for a combined total of 319kg.

His performance earned him the gold medal and set a new Games record.

The Nigerian successfully lifted 150kg in his third snatch attempt, although his official result was recorded as 147kg, before completing a 172kg clean and jerk to finish comfortably at the top of the standings.

Samoa’s John Lautafi Tafi claimed silver with a total of 314kg, while Nauru’s Ezekiel Moses won bronze after lifting 310kg.

Umoafia’s victory adds another gold medal to Nigeria’s growing medal haul at Glasgow 2026 and further strengthens the country’s impressive record in Commonwealth Games weightlifting.
