Umoafia: How I Upgraded Birmingham Bronze to Glasgow Gold
“It was not easy for me, but I had to try my hardest after the last Commonwealth Games,” an emotional Edidiong Joseph Umoafia said after upgrading his Birmingham 2022 bronze medal to gold at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.
The Nigerian weightlifter revealed that years of relentless training and determination fuelled his title-winning performance at the SEC Armadillo.
‘After I won bronze in Birmingham, I went back and trained hard every day, every chance, every minute. I tried to use my time well. I used all my thinking for this moment, for this day,’ Umoafia said.
Umoafia delivered a commanding display in the men’s 71kg competition, lifting 147kg in the snatch before producing 172kg in the clean and jerk to finish with a winning total of 319kg and claim the Commonwealth title.
Samoa’s John Lautafi Tafi mounted a spirited challenge but failed on both attempts at 178kg in the clean and jerk, leaving him with the silver medal, Samoa’s first medal of the Glasgow 2026 Games.
Nauru’s Ezekiel Moses completed the podium with bronze, also securing his country’s first medal of the competition.
Umoafia’s victory continued Team Nigeria’s dominant weightlifting campaign in Glasgow, marking another milestone in the country’s impressive medal haul at the Commonwealth Games.
