Unstoppable Osimhen makes Napoli, Nigeria UEFA club competition history

Victor Osimhen is back scoring again after a two-match break and this time he returned in a record-breaking fashion.

The Nigerian scored in the first half of Napoli’s UEFA Champions League round of 16 second leg tie against German Bundesliga side, Eintracht Frankfurt to put his side up 3-0 on aggregate after the Parnetopei had scored twice in the first leg in Frankfurt.

Osimhen, 24, headed in the goal at the stroke of half time as Napoli went into the break with the 1-0 lead. The Nigerian doubled his and Napoli’s advantage eight minutes after the restart from a Giovanni Di Lorenzo’s assist before the home side added the third via the penalty spot taken by Piotr Zielinski on 64 minutes.

With his goals, Osimhen has made history as the first Napoli player to score in both matches of a European Cup/Champions League knockout stage.

He scored once in the 4-2 loss to Barcelona at the Europa League intermediate stage second leg tie played at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona in February last year and has now scored twice in the second leg of the round of 16 tie in the UEFA Champions League against Eintracht Frankfurt.

The former Lille of France star also made history as the first Nigerian player to score twice in a UEFA Champions League knockout game. He has now brought his total haul in the competition to six to tie Ahmed Musa as the joint third top scoring Nigerian in the history of the competition.

Osimhen has now scored 51 goals in 90 appearances for Napoli since he joined the club from Ligue 1 side, Lille in September 2020.
