Vieira Linked with Senegal Role Following World Cup Exit
Former France international Patrick Vieira has emerged as a leading candidate to become the next head coach of Senegal as uncertainty surrounds the future of current manager Pape Thiaw.
According to reports, the Senegalese Football Federation is conducting a review of the national team’s performance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup following the Teranga Lions’ elimination in the Round of 32.
Senegal entered the tournament as reigning Africa Cup of Nations champions after defeating Morocco in the continental final earlier this year.
However, their World Cup campaign ended in dramatic fashion after surrendering a two-goal lead against Belgium, who scored three late goals, including an injury-time winner from Youri Tielemans, to complete a remarkable comeback.
The disappointing exit has placed Thiaw’s position under increasing scrutiny, with reports suggesting the federation is evaluating his future and considering alternative candidates.
Vieira has reportedly emerged as one of the leading options for the role.
The former Arsenal and France midfielder was born in Dakar and has maintained close ties with Senegal, including investing in the Diambars football academy, one of the country’s leading youth development centres.
The 50-year-old is currently without a coaching position following the end of his tenure at Italian club Genoa, making him immediately available should the Senegalese Football Federation decide to make a managerial change.
