Walaza makes history, becomes fourth man to complete sprint double at World U20 Athletics Championships

Banyada Walaza has become the first South African, second African and fourth man to successfully complete a sprint double in the history of the World U20 Athletics Championships.

The 18 year old who was a member of the South African 4x100m relay team to win silver at the Paris Olympics ran 20.52 to win the gold, two days after winning the 100m gold in 10.19.

He has now become the first South African to win a 100m title at the Championships and the first to complete a sprint double.

He is also the second African after Nigeria’s Francis Obikwelu to achieve the feat and the fourth man after Ato Boldon (1992), Obikwelu (1996) and Christian Malcolm (1998).
