Wanda Diamond League: Ajayi Sandwiched Between Jamaican Stars in Lane Four

Kayinsola Ajayi’s Diamond League debut at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene comes with added pressure, as the Nigerian sprinter has been drawn in lane four, directly between two of Jamaica’s finest.

On his inside is Ackeem Blake, a sub-9.90 performer with a reputation for explosive starts, while on his outside looms Oblique Seville, the reigning world champion and current world leader at 9.82 seconds.

Seville has already proven himself on the biggest stage, combining consistency with championship composure, while Blake has built a résumé as one of the most reliable sprinters in the circuit.

The rest of the field is hardly forgiving either. Christian Coleman, the former world champion, lines up with a personal best of 9.76, Kenneth Bednarek brings his versatility from the 200m into the shorter dash, and Ghana’s Joseph Amoah and Abdul-Rasheed Saminu add depth to the African challenge.

Australia’s Lachlan Kennedy, with a season’s best of 9.96, and Brandon Hicklin of the USA round out a lineup stacked with proven speed.

Ajayi has a 1-1 head-to-head clash with Seville, with both encounters coming at the last World Athletics Championships, while the Nigerian also has a 1-1 record with Blake, with Ajayi avenging his defeat at the 2024 Olympics in the semis at the 2025 World Championships. He trails Bednarek 2-0.

For Ajayi, victory in Eugene would be a statement that Nigeria has a sprinter capable of beating the very best.

With the ultimate championships in Budapest looming, where the winner will pocket $150,000 USD, Eugene offers him the perfect proving ground.

If he can withstand the pressure of Seville, Coleman, Bednarek and Blake and cross the line first, it will mark him out as a genuine contender for global glory.
