‘We Have Tough Love!’: Arokodare Opens Up On Special Bond With Ajax Coach After Atalanta Win

Super Eagles striker Tolu Arokodare has opened up about his special relationship with Ajax manager Míchel Sánchez after playing a decisive role in the Dutch giants’ 2-0 Champions League victory over Atalanta on Thursday.
The 25-year-old Nigerian, affectionately described as “the special one” by his coach, was again named among the substitutes but emerged to help Ajax secure an important European victory at the Johan Cruijff Arena.
Following the encounter, Arokodare and Sánchez shared a playful exchange on the pitch, with the Spanish tactician giving his striker a push before both men broke into laughter.
Speaking at the post-match press conference, Arokodare explained that their unusual interactions reflect the strong bond they have developed.
“We have our own language, you know,” the Nigerian said.
“We have tough love, he and I: I score, I shut him up with my finger. I miss a chance, he is shouting along the line. And then we see each other afterwards, and we laugh and cuddle.”
Arokodare, who previously celebrated a goal against PSV by putting a finger to his lips in Sánchez’s direction, insisted there was nothing unpleasant about their latest exchange.
“And you should see us during training!” he added.
“I can’t say exactly what I said in that get-together, because that’s between us, but I can say: it was only love, no hard feelings.”
Despite starting on the bench against Atalanta, the Nigerian refused to question his manager’s selection, praising the tactical decisions that ultimately secured victory.
“I have not received an explanation for that, but in my opinion that is not necessary,” Arokodare explained.
“The coach’s tactics worked, and the two substitutions he brought in scored and helped the team to victory. The coach knows what he’s doing, that’s why he’s the coach.”
The Nigerian’s performance and cheerful personality made him one of the standout figures of the evening as Ajax celebrated another memorable European victory.
