Why Ikogosi Marathon Barred Sowore From 2026 Race

Organisers Cite Security Concerns and Political Neutrality, Say Activist Registered but Was Not Cleared To Compete

The Ikogosi Marathon Initiative has explained why activist Omoyele Sowore was barred from participating in the 2026 Ikogosi 17.5km Race, citing security concerns and the need to protect the political neutrality of the event.

In an official press release dated October 31, 2026, and signed by its management, the organisers said Sowore had registered for the race but was neither issued a race bib number nor cleared to participate.

The Initiative said the decision followed a review of what it described as ‘independently obtained and verifiable evidence’, including activities involving Sowore and his associates within its office premises and elsewhere in Ekiti State.

According to the organisers, recent incidents involving the activist and his associates raised concerns about public safety and the political neutrality of the race.

The Initiative stressed that its decision was based on documented conduct and security considerations, rather than Sowore’s political affiliation, beliefs or aspirations.

“The Initiative respects individual political rights but will not permit activities compromising the safety, neutrality, or sporting objectives of our event,” the statement said.

It reiterated that the Ikogosi Marathon is an independent, non-partisan sporting organisation established in 2014 to promote athletics, youth development, tourism and community development in Ekiti State.

The organisers also said the event’s platform could not be used for political campaigns or partisan demonstrations.

On whether Sowore could participate in future editions, the Initiative said his eligibility would be subject to further review in line with its participation standards and security considerations.

The statement reaffirmed the organisers’ commitment to maintaining a safe, inclusive and politically neutral environment for participants.
