World Athletics U20 Championships: Nigerian Duo Face Tough 400m Semi-Final Draw
Nigeria’s Faith Ezechukwu and Jecinta Lawrence have been handed challenging draws in the women’s 400m semi-finals at the World Athletics U20 Championships in Oregon as they seek to keep the country’s hopes of a fifth World U20 title in the event alive.
Faith Ezechukwu will compete in Heat 1 from lane three, where she faces a formidable field led by American world leader Clara Adams (51.61), Poland’s Anastazja Kuś (51.64), Barbados’ Kadia Rock (51.92) and Jamaica’s Daniellia Dixon (52.64).
The Nigerian, whose personal best stands at 53.12 seconds, will need one of the best races of her career to finish among the top three automatic qualifiers.
Jecinta Lawrence, meanwhile, lines up in Heat 3 from lane one against another quality field featuring Guyana’s Tianna Springer (51.69), Slovakia’s Lenka Gymerská (52.59), The Bahamas’ Keyezra Thomas (52.58), Slovenia’s Maša Medjimurec (52.76) and Australia’s Shari Hurdman (52.94). Lawrence has a season’s best of 53.17 seconds.
The first three athletes in each semi-final will qualify automatically for the final, leaving no room for error.
Nigeria is chasing a fifth women’s 400m title at the World Athletics U20 Championships, having previously won gold through Fatimah Yusuf (1990), Bisi Afolabi (1994), Folashade Abugan (2008) and Imaobong Nse Uko (2021).
Both Faith Ezechukwu and Jecinta Lawrence will now be aiming to extend that rich legacy.
