Nigeria 2-0 Cameroon: Fantastic Eagles soar over Indomitable Lions, to meet Angola in quarterfinal

Like the Opta supercomputer predicted, the Super Eagles of Nigeria defeated the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon inside 90 minutes to book their ticket to the last eight of the ongoing 34th Africa Cup of Nations,  AFCON 2023.

Two goals, one in each half by Atalanta of Italy forward, Ademola Lookman were enough to give the Super Eagles a 2-0 win as they soared over the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon in their round of 16 tie at the Félix Houphouët-Boigny stadium in Abidjan on Saturday evening.

The first of Lookman’s two goals was created by Osimhen and the second was set up by the very impressive Calvin Bassey after a free kick in the last minute.

But the fans’ hero was Osimhen, who produced a tireless performance of running, attacking and harrying the Cameroon defenders. Osimhen also helped in defense on the few occasions it was needed.

It was clearly Nigeria’s best display in the competition while Lookman also put up his best display in a Super Eagles shirt.

The Super Eagles may have had less of the possession (42.3%) to Cameroon (57.7%), the Nigerians showed more hunger with the duels success rate of 52.2% while they won 62.9% of aerial duels.

The Super Eagles defence led by captain William Troost-Ekong did not allow the Indomitable Lions a shot on target while the Nigerians had four out which they scord twice.

Nigeria goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali went off on a stretcher in the 80th after a reckless challenge from Georges-Kevin Nkoudo, who was booked. Nwabali, who covered his face, was replaced by Francis Uzoho.
