Nigeria’s award sweep at WAFCON 2024 underscores Madugu’s coaching genius

Nigeria’s triumphant campaign at the 2024 CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) was more than just a title win—it was a masterclass in leadership, strategy, and team cohesion.

At the heart of it all stood Justin Madugu, who was deservedly named Coach of the Tournament after guiding the Super Falcons to their record-extending 10th continental crown.

The accolades tell the story:

Rasheedat Ajibade: Player of the Tournament, with 3 Woman of the Match awards, a goal in the semifinal, and multiple assists

Chiamaka Nnadozie: Goalkeeper of the Tournament, with 4 clean sheets and commanding performances
Nigeria: Fair Play Award, reflecting discipline and sportsmanship

Only the Top Scorer Award eluded Nigeria, claimed by Morocco’s Ghizlane Chebbak

These honors weren’t isolated achievements—they were the result of a system built by Madugu.

Appointed on an interim basis just months before the tournament, the 61-year-old tactician blended veterans and debutants into a unified force. His team conceded just one goal in six matches and delivered standout wins, including a 5–0 demolition of Zambia and a dramatic 3–2 comeback against Morocco in the final.

Madugu’s tactical flexibility was evident in his use of a rotating front line, bold squad selections, and set-piece precision. He benched stars like Oshoala and Echegini when needed, trusted emerging talents like Folashade Ijamilusi and Esther Okoronkwo, and kept the team mentally sharp under pressure.

His resume includes assistant roles in Nigeria’s 2014 and 2018 WAFCON wins, and technical experience at multiple FIFA tournaments. But Morocco 2024 was his breakout moment as head coach—and he delivered.

With Nigeria now looking ahead to the 2026 WAFCON and the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil, Madugu’s leadership offers hope for a new era of global competitiveness. His award isn’t just a personal milestone—it’s a symbol of Nigeria’s resurgence.
