Chuba Akpom Joins Ipswich Town, Says: ‘I’ll Bring a Winning Mentality’

Ipswich Town have completed the signing of Nigerian striker Chuba Akpom from Ajax on a season-long loan deal, with an obligation to buy for £7 million if the club secures promotion to the Premier League.

The move ends a drawn-out transfer saga that saw interest from Birmingham City, Middlesbrough, and Olympiakos, but Akpom made his intentions clear—he wanted to join Ipswich.

Birmingham had initially negotiated a £6 million permanent deal, which Ajax preferred, but withdrew after Akpom expressed his desire to move to Portman Road.

Speaking to TownTV, the 29-year-old forward shared his excitement about the new chapter:

‘I was really excited when I heard of the interest and I’m delighted to have joined a club with such big ambitions. I watch a lot of football and have always thought Ipswich would suit my style, so this move makes perfect sense.’

Akpom arrives with a wealth of experience, having featured for Ajax and played Champions League football with Lille. He believes those experiences have shaped him both on and off the pitch.

‘I’ve had lots of good experiences over the last few years, and I feel like all of these have improved me as a player and helped me be the person I am now.

‘I’m here to do as much as I can to help the team, in the changing room and on the pitch, and I’ll bring a winning mentality here.’

Ipswich fans will be eager to see how Akpom fits into manager Kieran McKenna’s plans as the club pushes for promotion in the Championship.
