UNICAL Vice Chancellor Offiong: ‘We Are Fully Prepared to Host One of The Best NUGA Games in History
National University Games Return to Calabar After 36 Years
The University of Calabar (UNICAL) has announced its readiness to host the 28th edition of the National University Games Association (NUGA), with 50 universities and no fewer than 50,000 athletes expected to converge on the Cross River State capital from November 14 to 24.
Speaking at a media briefing in Calabar, Vice Chancellor Prof. Offiong Offiong declared that the institution is prepared to deliver ‘the most memorable and best NUGA Games ever.’
He revealed that athletes will compete across 28 sports, with world-class facilities being put in place, including a new indoor sports hall.
‘We are fully prepared to host one of the best NUGA Games in history,’ Offiong said. ‘With unwavering integrity and commitment to excellence, we are ready to deliver an unforgettable experience that reflects the values of fair play, respect, and camaraderie that NUGA stands for.’
The Vice Chancellor highlighted the peaceful nature of Cross River State and assured that security agencies, in collaboration with the state government, are working to ensure safety for athletes, officials, and visitors.
He expressed gratitude to the Federal Government, the National Sports Commission, and the Ministry of Education for their support, while commending President Bola Tinubu for promoting sports and Governor Bassey Otu for backing the university’s preparations.
Offiong noted that hosting over 50,000 visitors will significantly boost the local economy and showcase Calabar’s hospitality.
‘The University of Calabar is ready to impact society, develop sports talent, and strengthen partnerships that will boost both sports and business in the state,’ he said.
The approved sports for the Games include football, basketball, athletics, swimming, rugby, tennis, table tennis, volleyball, hockey, boxing, judo, taekwondo, karate, beach volleyball, squash, badminton, handball, cricket, chess, scrabble, rowing, yachting, and e-sports.
This will be the first time UNICAL hosts the Games since 1990, marking a historic return of Nigeria’s premier university sports competition to Calabar.
