Handball Nations Cup: Nigeria Handball Team Crushes Zambia 36–18, Storms Into Quarterfinals
Nigeria’s Senior Men’s Handball Team, the Golden Arrows, delivered a commanding performance to overpower Zambia 36–18 in their second Group A fixture at the 25th Africa Men’s Handball Nations Cup in Kigali, Rwanda, sealing a place in the quarterfinals.
The Golden Arrows stamped their authority early, combining resolute defence with sharp attacking play to establish a 17–10 lead at halftime.
After the restart, Coach Rafiu Salami’s men raised the tempo, dismantling their opponents with swift ball circulation, accurate backcourt shooting, and disciplined defensive organisation.
Right winger Azeez Sulaiman was the standout performer, scoring eight goals to lead Nigeria’s offensive charge. The France-based star’s brilliance earned him the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award.
He was ably supported by Faruk Yusuf and John Shagari, who netted five goals each, while Rotibi Victor and Hakeem Salami added four apiece. Mustapha Mohammed and Kareem Ajibike chipped in three goals each, with Dikko Ibrahim, Captain Stephen Sessugh, and Cole Gbenga completing the tally.
Defensively, Nigeria were equally impressive, restricting Zambia to just eight goals in the second half. Compact lines and relentless pressure forced turnovers that translated into quick counter-attacks, underlining the team’s balance and depth.
With back-to-back victories against Algeria and Zambia, the Golden Arrows have confirmed their place in the last eight, strengthening their credentials as one of the tournament’s most competitive sides.
Nigeria will wrap up their Group A campaign against hosts Rwanda on Saturday, aiming to maintain their perfect run and build momentum heading into the knockout stage, with eyes firmly set on qualification for the 2027 World Championship in Germany.
