Lerena Confirms Fury vs Joshua ‘Will Happen Eventually’

Kevin Lerena, the WBC Bridgerweight Champion and a trusted member of Tyson Fury’s inner circle, has revealed that the long-anticipated showdown between Fury and Anthony Joshua will eventually take place.

Fury is currently in camp preparing for his next fight, with Lerena once again serving as a key sparring partner. The South African has been a fixture in Fury’s training camps for the past two years, including during preparations for the Oleksandr Usyk bouts, forging a close bond with the former heavyweight champion.

‘It’s always good training with him,’ Lerena told SportsBoom.com. ‘We’ve spent two years together and we train a lot. He’s a good fighter and I’ve learned a lot from him, and I guess he learns a lot from me too.’

Their partnership, Lerena explained, developed naturally through repeated camps and shared experiences at the highest level. ‘I was in his camp for the Usyk fights over the past two years. That’s how we became friends. I was his senior sparring partner and we’re very close,’ he said.

Boxing history is filled with dream fights that take years to materialise with Floyd Mayweather vs Manny Pacquiao being the most famous example. In today’s era, the defining matchup remains Fury vs Joshua. Both British heavyweights are former world champions, and despite setbacks, fan demand for the clash has never waned.

Lerena believes patience will pay off.

‘It might still happen, that’s all I’m going to say,’ he remarked cautiously. ‘I know what’s going to happen, but it’s not my place to announce anything. Yes, I do think it will happen eventually.’

Meanwhile, Joshua is navigating a difficult period following the tragic deaths of his close associates, Sina Ghami and Latif ‘Latz’ Ayodele, who lost their lives in a car accident along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in December 2025.

The 36-year-old broke his silence last week, vowing on social media to honour their legacy and continue the journey they inspired.
