Federation Cup: NFRA Condemns Assault on Referees, Moves to Secure Match Venues

The Nigeria Football Referees’ Association (NFRA) has strongly condemned the violent attack on match officials during the semi-final clash of the 2026 President’s Federation Cup between Nassarawa United of Lafia and Ikorodu United of Lagos, held at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin, on Wednesday, June 17.

According to reports, immediately after the penalty shoot-out, two players and a medical official of Nassarawa United allegedly assaulted the referees as they made their way to the tunnel.

Eyewitnesses confirmed that the Fourth Official sustained bodily injuries during the incident, while his communication device, stopwatch, and official uniform were destroyed.

The referee’s uniform was also torn in the altercation.

NFRA Acting President, Sir Kelechi Mejuobi, expressed deep concern over the recurring cases of violence against referees at match venues.

He called on football authorities to take decisive action by punishing those responsible and implementing stronger measures to protect match officials.

In response, the NFRA has directed referees to ensure that adequate security personnel are present at venues before matches commence. Where security is absent or insufficient, referees are to immediately report to the State Football Association, the NFF Referees Committee, and the NFRA.

The association further warned that it may consider avoiding venues where referees are attacked, and may decline to officiate matches involving teams whose players or officials engage in assaults on referees.
