2026 CAF Awards: Nigeria Nominated In Three Women’s Categories

Super Falcons, Uzoma, Akekoromowei, Adegbuyi Make Shortlists As Cameroon, Malawi Lead Nominations

Nigeria have secured nominations in three categories of the women’s section of the 2026 CAF Awards, with the Super Falcons shortlisted for Women’s National Team of the Year and three players earning individual nominations.

Goalkeeper Christiana Uzoma, forward Seimeyeha Janet Akekoromowei and Oluwakemi Adegbuyi are among the nominees unveiled by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) on Tuesday.

Uzoma, who plays for Edo Queens, is nominated for Women’s Goalkeeper of the Year, while Akekoromowei, who plays for Benfica, and Adegbuyi, listed with Edo Queens and Robo Queens, are in contention for Women’s Young Player of the Year.

The Super Falcons are also among ten nominees for Women’s National Team of the Year, following another year of competition on the continental stage.

However, Nigeria have no representative in the Women’s Player of the Year category, which features ten nominees led by three members of Cameroon’s title-winning squad at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

Marie Ngah Manga, Michaely Bihina and Monique Ngock earned nominations after helping Cameroon secure their first continental crown.

They face competition from Malawi sisters Tabitha and Temwa Chawinga, Zambia’s Barbra Banda, South Africa’s Thembi Kgatlana and other leading African players.

Cameroon’s triumph at WAFCON features prominently across the nominations, with Bihina also shortlisted for Goalkeeper of the Year and Maeva Nyadjou among the Young Player of the Year contenders.

Malawi’s historic run to their first continental final has also earned recognition, with both Chawinga sisters nominated for Player of the Year and goalkeeper Mercy Sikelo shortlisted in her category. Rose Kadzere is among the Young Player of the Year nominees after scoring the decisive goal in Malawi’s quarter-final victory over Ghana.

The Super Falcons will face competition for Women’s National Team of the Year from Algeria, Cabo Verde, Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Malawi, Mali, Morocco and South Africa.

The nominations for Women’s Interclub Player of the Year, Women’s Coach of the Year and Women’s Club of the Year will be announced after the conclusion of the CAF Women’s Champions League Egypt 2026.

The CAF Awards ceremony will take place in Lagos, Nigeria, on December 7.
