Heartland Queens, Ikorodu City Seek Historic Triumph in President Federation Cup Finals
The stage is set for a thrilling President Federation Cup final on Saturday at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba, as debutants Heartland Queens and Ikorodu City look to upset the established order in Nigerian football.
The women’s final will kick off at noon, while the men’s championship clash is scheduled for 4pm, with both matches expected to deliver a memorable spectacle for football fans.
Heartland Queens of Owerri have emerged as one of the surprise packages of this year’s competition, earning widespread admiration after defeating highly-rated FC Robo Queens of Lagos in the semi-finals at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin City.
FC Robo Queens had earlier eliminated record contenders Rivers Angels in the quarter-finals, but their impressive run was halted by a determined Heartland Queens side that has shown resilience throughout the tournament.
The Owerri-based team reached the final after overcoming Dragon Fury Ladies, Ahudiyannem Queens and Ibom Angels in previous rounds before securing their place in the title decider.
Standing in their way are two-time champions Nasarawa Amazons of Lafia, who booked their place in the final after edging Sunshine Queens of Akure in a tightly contested semi-final at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu.
Nasarawa Amazons, known for their consistency and experience in women’s football, had earlier defeated Osklean FC in the Round of 32 before surviving penalty shootouts against FC Naija Ratels of Abuja and Edo Queens.
In the men’s final, three-time champions El-Kanemi Warriors of Maiduguri will face newcomers Ikorodu City in what promises to be a fiercely contested encounter.
The winner of the men’s final will not only lift the President Federation Cup trophy but will also earn Nigeria’s ticket to represent the country in the CAF Confederation Cup.
El-Kanemi Warriors, one of the competition’s historic names, claimed back-to-back titles in 1991 and 1992 before adding a third crown in 2024 after defeating Abia Warriors in the final at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Lagos.
However, Ikorodu City will be aiming to complete a remarkable debut campaign by defeating the Maiduguri-based giants and creating a new chapter in the club’s history.
