Ajayi Becomes First Nigerian Sprinter in World Athletics Overall Top 100, Rises to 83rd

Nigeria’s sprint sensation Kanyinsola Ajayi has made history by becoming the first Nigerian sprinter to break into the top 100 of the World Athletics men’s overall rankings, following a series of outstanding performances that have elevated him among the world’s elite track and field athletes.

The reigning NCAA 60m and 100m champion is now ranked 83rd in the men’s overall rankings with a ranking score of 1,340 points, making him only the third Nigerian athlete to feature in the top 100 across all track and field disciplines.

Ajayi’s remarkable rise has been driven by the World Athletics ranking system, which awards athletes points based on two key factors, the quality of their performance (result score) and their finishing position (placing score) at competitions.

These combine to produce a performance score, while an athlete’s overall ranking is determined by the average of their best performances during the ranking period. Unlike the event rankings, the overall rankings compare athletes across all track and field disciplines.

A major boost to Ajayi’s ranking came at the Prefontaine Classic Diamond League meeting in Eugene earlier this month, where he equalled his own Nigerian record of 9.84 seconds to win the men’s 100m.

The performance earned him a maximum performance score of 1,400 points, significantly increasing his overall ranking average.

The 21-year-old’s consistent performances throughout the season, including his NCAA title-winning campaign and national record, have also contributed to his steady climb up the rankings.

Ajayi is not the only Nigerian in the overall top 100. National 400m hurdles record holder Ezekiel Nathaniel remains Nigeria’s highest-ranked athlete, occupying 17th position in the men’s overall standings.

The sprinter has effectively taken over from shot put star Chukwuebuka Enekwechi, who had previously been Nigeria’s regular representative in the overall top 100 but has moved in and out of the rankings in recent seasons.

In the men’s 100m event rankings, Ajayi is currently ranked fifth in the world, underlining his emergence as one of the leading sprinters ahead of the major championships later this season.
