Saliba Avoids Surgery but Faces Lengthy Recovery

Arsenal have confirmed that William Saliba will miss an extended period after suffering a back injury during France’s 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign.

The 25-year-old defender had been managing the problem for several weeks before being forced off after just 30 minutes of France’s semi-final defeat to Spain.

He subsequently missed the team’s bronze-medal match against England.

After returning to London and undergoing assessment by a specialist, Arsenal confirmed that Saliba will not require surgery.

Instead, the French international will begin a managed recovery programme as he works his way back to full fitness.

Saliba’s absence is a major setback for Arsenal and manager Mikel Arteta, with the Gunners set to face Manchester City in the Community Shield on August 16 before beginning their Premier League title defence against promoted Coventry City five days later.

The defender made 50 appearances for Arsenal last season, helping the club win their first Premier League title in 22 years and reach the Champions League final.
