Ruth Nyong Wins Silver as Nigeria Open Commonwealth Games Weightlifting Medal Account

Nigeria’s Ruth Asuquo Nyong has won a silver medal in the women’s 48kg weightlifting event at the ongoing 23rd Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.

Nyong lifted a combined total of 168kg to finish second in the final. She recorded 75kg in the snatch and 93kg in the clean and jerk, successfully completing all six of her attempts.

India’s Saikhom Mirabai Chanu won the gold medal after lifting 190kg, including an 85kg snatch and 105kg clean and jerk, while Malaysia’s Irene Jane Henry claimed bronze with a total lift of 167kg.

Nyong’s silver medal gives Team Nigeria another podium finish at Glasgow 2026 and adds to the country’s medal haul at the Commonwealth Games.
