Glasgow 2026 Day 7 Review: Team Nigeria Bags Gold, Silver as Nathaniel Marches Into 400m Hurdles Final
Nigeria enjoyed another memorable day at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games on Wednesday as Goodness Nwachukwu shattered the world record to claim the country’s seventh gold medal, Jessica Oji secured a historic silver in the women’s shot put and Ezekiel Nathaniel stormed into the men’s 400m hurdles final.
The day also saw Clinton Opute bow out of the men’s 200m freestyle after finishing 35th overall, while weightlifter Mary Taiwo Osijo narrowly missed the podium with a fifth-place finish in the women’s 86kg event.
Nwachukwu Smashes World Record to Win Nigeria’s Seventh Gold
Goodness Nwachukwu delivered one of the performances of the Games, breaking the world record to win the women’s Para discus throw F42-44/F61-64 title.
Competing in the F42 category, Nwachukwu launched the discus to 39.66m to set a new world record and secure the Commonwealth Games gold medal, further boosting Team Nigeria’s impressive medal haul.
Wales’ Funmi Oduwaiye took silver with a Games record and season’s best of 38.52m in the F44 class, while compatriot Bree Cronin claimed bronze with a season’s best throw of 36.00m. Nigeria’s Destiny Agbo also impressed, finishing fifth overall in the F44 category with a personal best of 33.79m.
Oji Makes History With Shot Put Silver
Teenager Jessica Oji announced herself on the international stage by winning silver in the women’s shot put on her Commonwealth Games debut.
The 19-year-old produced a best throw of 17.87m to finish behind defending champion Sarah Mitton of Canada, who retained her title with 19.88m. Jamaica’s Lloydricia Cameron also threw 17.87m but settled for bronze after Oji claimed silver on countback thanks to the better second-best mark.
Oji became only the second Nigerian woman to win a Commonwealth Games medal in the shot put after steadily improving through the competition before producing her medal-winning effort in the third round.
Nathaniel Advances to Another Commonwealth Final
Ezekiel Nathaniel booked his place in a second consecutive Commonwealth Games men’s 400m hurdles final after winning his semifinal in 48.69 seconds.
Running in lane seven, the Nigerian comfortably secured automatic qualification ahead of England’s Jake Minshull, who finished second in 48.88 seconds, while India’s Santhosh Kumar Tamilarasan advanced as one of the fastest losers.
Nathaniel, who finished sixth on his Commonwealth Games debut in Birmingham four years ago, will now chase history as he aims to become the first Nigerian to win the men’s 400m hurdles title and only the second to claim a medal in the event after Kingsley Agbabokha’s silver medal in 1966.
Opute Exits in 200m Freestyle Heats
Nigeria’s Clinton Opute was unable to progress beyond the heats of the men’s 200m freestyle after clocking 2:03.35 to finish 35th overall at the Tollcross Swimming Centre.
England’s James Guy led the qualifiers with a time of 1:45.69, ahead of Australia’s Sam Short and Harrison Turner, as the top eight swimmers booked places in the final.
Osijo Finishes Fifth in Women’s 86kg Weightlifting
Mary Taiwo Osijo narrowly missed out on a medal in the women’s 86kg weightlifting competition after placing fifth with a combined lift of 225kg.
The Nigerian successfully lifted 100kg in the snatch and 125kg in the clean and jerk to finish level on total with New Zealand’s Litia Sipola Nacagilevu, who claimed fourth place on countback.
Australia’s Eileen Cikamatana dominated the event with Games records in the clean and jerk and total to win gold with 248kg, while England’s Madias Ngake and Canada’s Rose Beaudoin completed the podium with silver and bronze respectively.
