WAFU B U20: Flying Eagles Seek Revenge, Trophy and AFCON Ticket Against Burkina Faso
Nigeria’s Flying Eagles will battle Burkina Faso’s Young Stallions on Sunday with both the WAFU B U20 Championship trophy and a ticket to next year’s Africa U20 Cup of Nations at stake in the regional final in Yamoussoukro, Côte d’Ivoire.
The seven-time African champions are seeking to successfully defend the regional title they won in Lomé in October 2024, but victory over Burkina Faso would mean much more than another trophy.
The final will also determine the second WAFU B representative at next year’s U20 AFCON, with hosts Ghana already guaranteed a place at the continental finals.
Sunday’s showdown will give Nigeria an immediate opportunity for revenge after Burkina Faso inflicted a 2-0 defeat on the Flying Eagles in the group stage of the competition. It will also be the first time the two sides have met in the final of the WAFU B U20 Championship, with their previous encounters coming during the group stages.
The recent rivalry has been difficult for Nigeria. Their 2022 meeting in Niger Republic ended in a 2-2 draw, while Burkina Faso edged the Flying Eagles 1-0 when they met again in the 2024 edition in Lomé.
Flying Eagles head coach Abdu Maikaba believes the earlier defeat could work in Nigeria’s favour, with his players now familiar with the strengths and weaknesses of their opponents.
‘I think this is an opportunity for us to redeem ourselves having lost to Burkina Faso in the group stage,’ Maikaba said. ‘Having played them before, we now have an idea of their shape and structure and we are working on how to capitalize on their weaknesses, while also consolidating on our own strength.’
Nigeria will therefore enter the final knowing exactly what is at stake. A victory would avenge the group-stage defeat, retain the WAFU B crown and secure the Flying Eagles’ place at the 2027 Africa U20 Cup of Nations.
The decisive encounter will be played at the Stade Charles Konan Banny in Yamoussoukro, with kick-off scheduled for 7pm on Sunday.
