CAF Head-to-Head Rule Sends Nigeria Through, Eliminates Zambia Despite Victory

Nigeria’s Super Falcons booked their place in the quarterfinals of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations after a 6-2 demolition of Egypt, while Zambia suffered a heartbreaking exit despite defeating Malawi 2-1 as CAF’s head-to-head tie-break rules decided the final Group C standings.

The dramatic conclusion to Group C saw Nigeria, Zambia and Malawi all finish on six points after Zambia edged Malawi and the Super Falcons produced their biggest win of the tournament against Egypt.

However, with the three teams locked on points, CAF regulations required the standings to be determined using only the matches played among the tied teams.

In the mini-league, all three sides finished level on three points and identical goal difference, having each recorded one victory and one defeat.

Nigeria and Malawi each scored four goals in those head-to-head encounters, while Zambia managed only three, leaving the Copper Queens at the bottom of the mini-table and ending their campaign despite their victory over Malawi.

With Zambia eliminated from the tie-break, CAF’s head-to-head criteria were reapplied to Nigeria and Malawi. Malawi’s 3-2 victory over the Super Falcons earlier in the tournament proved decisive, handing the East Africans top spot in Group C and leaving Nigeria to qualify as runners-up.

The Super Falcons had earlier made light work of Egypt, with Asisat Oshoala opening the scoring before Gift Monday doubled Nigeria’s advantage.

Egypt briefly threatened through Nadin Ghazy, but second-half goals from Uchenna Kanu, Christy Ucheibe, Rasheedat Ajibade and another late strike sealed an emphatic 6-2 victory and ensured Nigeria ended the group stage with momentum.

Although Nigeria finished with a superior overall goal difference than Malawi and the same goal difference as Zambia, those statistics were irrelevant under CAF regulations, which prioritize head-to-head results among tied teams before overall group records.

Nigeria now advance to the quarter-finals as Group C runners-up, while Malawi progress as group winners. Zambia, despite defeating Malawi in their final match, bow out of the tournament after falling short in the head-to-head calculations.
