‘There Is Time for Everything’: Wanyonyi Overcomes Stomach Problem to Clock World-Leading 1:41.76 in Zurich

Kenya’s Emmanuel Wanyonyi produced a stunning performance at the Zurich Diamond League on Thursday, winning the men’s 800m in a world-leading 1:41.76 despite battling a stomach problem shortly before the race.
Wanyonyi said he was initially concerned that the stomach issue could affect his performance, but he recovered in time to produce a commanding run.
‘The time was amazing. The race was good. The weather conditions were good too. I could go out and play, my body was responding to run fast.
‘But before the start of the race, I had a big problem with my stomach. I thought that maybe I cannot go to finish the race well,’ he said.
The Olympic champion, however, remained determined to compete and deliver a fast performance.
‘But I just got here to win. Just to try to run fast, to run my own race. This result shows that my body is coming up. And I am so happy to be here with this great crowd,’ Wanyonyi added.
Wanyonyi was also inspired by the atmosphere in Zurich and the world records being broken at the meeting, insisting that he believes his own world-record moment will eventually arrive.
‘I give the atmosphere 200 per cent. And when I see the world records being broken, I know my time will come. There is time for everything,’ he said.
