2026 FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup: Falconets Hold China To Goalless Draw, Knockout Qualification Goes Down to Final Game
Nigeria’s Falconets were held to a goalless draw by China PR in their second Group F match at the 2026 FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup in Poland on Thursday, leaving their hopes of reaching the knockout rounds to be decided in their final group fixture.
The encounter at Arena Sosnowiec saw both sides create opportunities, but neither could find the breakthrough as goalkeeper Christiana Uzoma and the Nigerian defence stood firm against a determined Chinese attack.
Coach Moses Aduku’s side started brightly and created the first clear opportunity in the 17th minute when Janet Akekoromowei threatened the China defence.
Nigeria gradually took control as the first half progressed, with Kafayat Mafisere winning a corner in the 33rd minute before Akekoromowei came close again in the 38th minute and deep into first-half added time.
China, however, remained dangerous, with Huang Jiaxin, Zhou Xinyi and Song Lijuan testing the Nigerian defence, while Xue Sifan delivered two threatening corners.
Uzoma was equal to the challenge whenever called upon, helping the Falconets keep China at bay as the teams went into the break level.
China introduced Chen Ruilin for Xiao Yafei at the start of the second half in an attempt to add greater attacking impetus, and the substitute quickly became involved as the Asians increased the pressure.
Chen, Xue and Huang all registered attempts, but Nigeria continued to create openings of their own.
Precious Oscar went close in the 54th minute, while Mafisere threatened twice in quick succession in the 56th and 60th minutes. Queen Joseph also had an opportunity in the 58th minute as the Falconets searched for the decisive goal.
Nigeria appeared to have been handed a golden opportunity to take the lead in the 74th minute after being awarded a penalty. However, the decision was overturned following a VAR review.
Neither side could produce a late winner, with the final whistle confirming a 0-0 draw.
The result leaves Nigeria with one point from two Group F matches, meaning the Falconets must now turn their attention to their final group game against New Caledonia on Sunday, September 13, in Łódź.
With qualification for the knockout stage still at stake, Aduku’s side will need a strong performance in their final group outing to keep their campaign at the global tournament alive.
