Flamingos Fire Five Past Niger In WAFU-B U17 Girls Cup Opener

Nigeria’s Flamingos made a flying start to their 2026 WAFU-B U17 Girls Cup title defence, thrashing Niger Republic 5-0 in their opening game in Yamoussoukro on Wednesday.

Captain Harmony Chidi set the tone for the emphatic victory when she opened the scoring in the 16th minute after Nigeria had established early control of the contest.

The Flamingos continued to dominate possession and create chances, but had to wait for their second goal before Awawu Bashiru produced a clinical finish to double Nigeria’s advantage.

Nigeria thought they had added a third before the interval, but Adegbuyi’s effort was ruled out for offside.

The decision did little to change the pattern of the game, however, as Niger struggled to cope with Nigeria’s pace, movement and creativity.

Flamingos goalkeeper Onyiyechi Opara had little to do during the first half as Nigeria maintained firm control.

The dominance continued after the restart, with Nigeria patiently probing for more goals.

The third finally arrived in the 83rd minute when Ohunene Sunday found the net to put the Flamingos firmly in command.

Mary Dunstan added the fourth soon afterwards before Ayomide Rotimi completed the rout in the fourth minute of stoppage time.
