Super Eagles Face Madagascar Test as AFCON Race Begins

No room for excuses, no margin for a slow start, the Super Eagles begin their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign against Madagascar on Friday with the pressure already building in Uyo.

Nigeria must hit the ground running at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, knowing that only one qualifying ticket is available to the three non-host nations in Group L.

After missing the last two FIFA World Cups, the Super Eagles cannot afford another campaign that leaves their supporters frustrated. Eric Chelle’s men must now turn expectations into action when the Barea arrive for the opening battle.

Madagascar, however, are unlikely to be intimidated by Nigeria’s pedigree. The Barea have already shown they can hurt the Super Eagles, famously beating Nigeria 2-0 at the 2019 AFCON in Egypt before advancing to the quarter-finals on their tournament debut.

The stakes are made even higher by Tanzania’s automatic qualification as one of the tournament’s co-hosts, leaving Nigeria, Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau to battle for the group’s sole available spot.

Nigeria will have to overcome the absence of Victor Osimhen, who is still recovering from a muscle injury. Taiwo Awoniyi has been recalled, while Akor Adams and Tolu Arokodare give Chelle alternative attacking options.

There is also uncertainty in goal. Maduka Okoye remains out of camp after being granted permission to attend a club commitment with Udinese, while Arthur Okonkwo is already in camp alongside Stanley Nwabali.

At the other end of the pitch, Moses Simon could have his own historic moment. The experienced winger will earn his 100th Super Eagles cap if he features against Madagascar, adding a personal milestone to an already important night for Nigeria.

Ola Aina is back in the squad for the first time since September 2025, but Zaidu Sanusi is unavailable through injury. Alex Iwobi and Ademola Lookman are expected to carry much of Nigeria’s attacking threat, with Samuel Chukwueze, Moses Usor and George Ilenikhena also available to Chelle.

Madagascar coach Corentin Martins will hope his players can frustrate the hosts and turn the pressure against them. Rayan Raveloson, who has nine international goals, will also be chasing his 10th for the Barea.

The visitors may take encouragement from Nigeria’s recent struggles, but their own qualifying record offers little comfort, having won only two of their last 18 AFCON qualifying matches.
