Queen Joseph: Flamingos Are Representing Africa, Not Just Nigeria

Nigeria forward proud as Flamingos make history with maiden FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup final ticket

Nigeria forward Queen Joseph has expressed immense pride after the Flamingos made history by qualifying for their first-ever FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup final with a convincing 3-1 victory over Brazil in Wednesday’s semi-final in Rabat, Morocco.

Joseph, who opened the scoring in the 56th minute, described reaching the final as a huge privilege and said the team’s historic achievement meant they were carrying the hopes of the entire African continent.

“I feel very happy. Playing in the final is a big privilege, representing my country in the final is a big privilege for me. I’m super-proud of myself and my team because we made history,” Joseph said.

“We are not here just representing Nigeria, we are here representing Africa as a whole.”

The Flamingos booked their place in the final through an impressive second-half performance against Brazil at the Mohammed VI Football Complex, Pitch 3.

After a dominant but goalless first half, Joseph broke the deadlock in the 56th minute, side-footing home after Oluwakemi Adegbuyi’s effort fell into her path.

Awawu Bashiru doubled Nigeria’s lead in the 71st minute when her cross deceived Brazil goalkeeper Nathy and sailed into the net.

Bashiru then completed her brace in the 80th minute with an excellent individual effort, beating a Brazilian defender before poking the ball into the bottom corner.

Brazil pulled one back through Greise Kelly in the 89th minute, but it was too late to deny Nigeria a historic victory.

Bashiru was named Player of the Match following her outstanding performance.

The Flamingos will now seek to crown their remarkable campaign by winning the title in their maiden appearance in the tournament’s final.
